A positive skills assessment is a mandatory requirement for skilled migration under Australia’s General Skilled Migration (GSM) and Employer Sponsored Visa programs. Visa Types That Require a Skills Assessment
If you are applying for any of the following visa subclasses, a valid skills assessment is typically required:
- Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS) – Subclass 186
- Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme (RSMS) – Subclass 187
- Skilled Independent Visa – Subclass 189 (Points-Tested Stream)
- Skilled Regional (Provisional) Visa – Subclass 489
- Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Visa – Subclass 491
- Skilled Employer-Sponsored Regional (Provisional) Visa – Subclass 494
- Skilled Nominated Visa – Subclass 190
- Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) Visa – Subclass 482
Assessing Authorities
Different occupations are assessed by different designated authorities. For example:
- Accounting qualifications may be assessed by CPA Australia, CA ANZ, or IPA.
- Other professions, such as engineering, IT, teaching, or trades, have their own relevant bodies.
Some occupations require mandatory work experience, while others may rely solely on academic qualifications.
